Ms. Marlene Gomez serves as Project Director of Smokefree Air For Everyone (S.A.F.E). In April 2005, as a part of her work with S.A.F.E., she helped organize the first ever conference on smoke-free housing. The conference, which was called Smoke-free Choice: A New Amenity in Multi-Unit Housing, provided the opportunity for leaders from different sectors to come together and discuss non-smoking sections in apartment buildings.
Ms. Gomez is currently managing a grant from the Los Angeles County Health Department’s Tobacco Control and Prevention Program. As a part of the program, technical support is offered to the residents of Lawndale who are concerned about tobacco use in apartment buildings in that city. The grant also requires outreach to policy makers, government commissions, the business community and local community organizations. In addition to Lawndale, she is working on Baldwin Park, Glendale, and Santa Monica.
Ms. Gomez is a member of the Campaign for Smokefree Choice in Multi-Unit Housing, and she has been on the board of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Los Angeles County. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chicano/a Studies from UCLA and is fluent in English and Spanish. Her previous experience includes service with the Health Corp division of Americorp.
